3 Steps To Breaking Our Addiction to Bad Food

ree

As I reach the 36-hour mark of my water fast, a thought strikes me: I’m reminded of an undeniable relationship with food—one that might even border on addiction. Admitting this feels uncomfortable, doesn’t it? After all, food is a necessity for survival, so how can it be an addiction? Yet, perhaps this admission brings us closer to understanding something profound.

Food has the power to transform lives, for better or for worse. It’s not just a source of sustenance; it can also be a source of destruction—arguably causing more turmoil than drugs like heroin, alcohol, and meth combined. From the dawn of humanity, food has tempted us(after all it was the first temptation in the bible), leading to countless struggles with health issues like heart disease, diabetes and a whole host of metabolic diseases. Still, we don’t often view our relationship with food through the same lens as other vices.

But maybe we should.

Recognizing that we have an unhealthy connection with food can be the first step toward healing. Much like an addict, true freedom doesn't come from trying to control that which we feel we should dominate, but rather from acknowledging that the substance—food in our case—should not control us.

When we fight to exert control over our eating habits, things tend to spiral. Look at someone who has wrestled with alcoholism; imposing strict limits often leads to failure. The real change occurs when beliefs about the substance shift, when behaviors change, and a healthier reward system replaces the old.

What if we approached our relationship with food just like we would with any other addiction? What if we embraced honesty and admitted to our struggles? This is where the journey to healing truly begins.

So, what's next? Let’s keep progressing using the core principles that have always inspired real transformation: Create. Build. Lead.

Step One: Create a New Mindset

First, we need to create a new mindset about food. Dig deep into the reasons behind our eating habits. Food is meant to energize us and sustain us—how often do we actually think about this when we eat? Let’s reshape our beliefs about food, acknowledging its impact on our well-being so we can move forward to the second step:

Step Two: Build A Behavior Tied to the Mindset

Build. When we focus on building healthier bodies, we reinforce our new beliefs with positive actions. Our bodies are designed to move and heal; they are resilient machines that carry us through life. Just like a well-maintained car, the more effort we invest in our bodies, the longer and healthier our journey will be.

Too many of us let our “vehicles” languish, parked and neglected. It’s time to take action and revitalize our approach to food and health. Not only must we choose good fuel for our body, but we must also move.  Exercise can be the new or re-invented behavior tied to our changed mindset.  Some of us workout to reward ourselves with food.  But what if the workout was proof that we chose the right fuel?

Step Three: Lead a Friend or Loved One on the Journey with You

To cultivate a healthier body, we naturally seek to nourish ourselves with the finest ingredients. When we fuel ourselves with quality, our bodies run at their best, and we start to reap the benefits. And what are those benefits? We have the incredible opportunity to inspire others to develop healthier perspectives on food and to embark on their own journeys toward healthier living.

Have you ever noticed how discovering something transformative draws the people around you to explore it too? There’s nothing quite like helping someone else break free from obstacles that have held them back. It’s a fulfilling experience, and our true fuel comes from serving a purpose—something we could all use to replenish our energy.

We all share a collective responsibility here. Each one of us has a vital role in this community. We come together not only to support one another in adopting healthier beliefs and building stronger bodies but also to lead others toward more vibrant lives.

Closing Thoughts

Next time you are upset with yourself for your eating habits try this.  Instead of beating yourself up, forgive and forget.  Then dig in on your beliefs around food.  It won’t happen over night, but aim to consume new knowledge around the food that fuels you and watch as your beliefs slowly change.  Once you make a good decision on meals for a day, then force a workout.  Pay attention after that workout to how you feel.  Then reward yourself by inviting someone else on the journey with you.  If you read this far then here is a gift.  Have the person you choose use the code: Myfriend and they get two free classes to jumpstart their own journey!

To Use the Code: have the friend book thru our website and select “pay now” from the drop down menu @ checkout.  On the book page to follow they will see a spot to enter the promo code and can book up to 2 classes without even having to put in their cc info.
